He will take care of it until they return home
Entire families are fleeing the war in Ukraine, often bringing pets in tow. However, there are those who cannot and then decide to entrust dogs and cats to the owner of a animal shelter in Lviv, a city particularly affected by the bombing of the Russian army. The owner promises the families to take care of the pets until they return home.
They cried when they left them here. But I promised: I will not give them to anyone else and when they come back they will have their dogs back.
These are the words of Orest Zalipsky, who does not know, however, if he will be able to keep his promise. But he tries, hosting in his homeless animal shelter north of Lviv the pets of displaced people who cannot bring their animal friends with them.
Many come with dogs, cats, guinea pigs, parrots.
Nobody wants to leave pets behind. And those who fail to take them out of Ukraine entrust them to associations and shelters, while aid for animals also arrives from all over Europe. The stories are heartwarming and heartbreaking:
When Oleg and Mikahil, 11 and 6, arrived from Kiev yesterday with their two Russian Spaniels (who only have Russian names), they were really desperate. The parents tried to make them think.
Often, in fact, they cannot also carry dogs, cats and other pets. And so they part with a broken heart.
It was their piggy bank that they filled to make their dream come true, to go on vacation to the sea. They left it to me so that I can take care of their dogs and those of all the other refugees.
Animal shelter in Lviv hosts dogs and cats and tells their moving stories
Orest Zalipsky also tells the heartbreaking story of Igor, an American staffordshire terrier.
A Ukrainian soldier who left for the front brought it here. Igor doesn’t like women and children, he agrees to be touched only by me. He’s angry.
While he tells other frightened animals arrive at his facility, but also families who live in relatively quiet areas of Ukraine who want to lend a hand to humans, promising to host the pets while awaiting the return of their legitimate families.
