In the metropolitan area the streets have been so water-filled that it would be easiest to proceed by swimming or sliding like a seal.

It’s sand sand! It doesn’t have to see a snowdrift, but spends its life under the warm sun, diving in the sand like Roope the Duck in his wallet. Slightly inconsistently, the lizard does not know how to swim in the water, but may drown in a water tank as a pet if it is too deep. A creature adapted to the desert, on the other hand, does not need much water.

Skink dives into the sand to protect himself from its arch-enemy, the sahorn rhino. Under the sand, the lizard is also safe from the scorching sun of the wilderness.

Although the lizard breathes in the sand, no sand enters its lungs. The sand adheres to the mucous membranes of the airways and some of it is expelled with exhalation. The rest of the sand is swallowed by the lizard.

This, too, has been studied in Germany. For Heikälä, the sand ham is called Apothekerskink, a pharmacy ham. Lizard is believed to have medicinal effects and so the best of the animal has in the past been ground herbal powder in a pharmacy.

For the Sahrawi Bedouins, lizards, on the other hand, have been a convenient fast food for desert hikes.
