Angola’s ruling party maintained its grip on power and secured President Joao Lourenco a second term in elections this week.
The party overcame a strong challenge from the renewed opposition, media outlets reported Thursday.
The People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) won more than 51 percent of the valid votes in Wednesday’s elections, Lucas Coelondo, a spokesman for the National Electoral Commission, said at a press conference in the capital, Luanda, on Thursday.
Quilondo added that the main opposition party, the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola, won more than 44% of the vote.
A spokesman for the Electoral Commission stated that the preliminary results are based on votes counted in 97% of the polling stations, while the final counting will not lead to any major changes in the final result.
