The long-awaited return of the older Grand Theft Auto games to modern consoles has been razed to the ground by critics and gamers alike. Game developer Rockstar promises to get well after the normally celebrated studio is widely accused of money grabs.
“We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience, we are working to improve and update overall performance,” the statement read.
Grand Theft Auto, or GTA, is one of the most beloved and best-selling video game series of all time. The latest installment, GTA V, has sold over 140 million copies and is still one of the most played games in the world eight years after its launch. Developer Rockstar has gold in their hands with the franchise: every time a new part is announced or released, the entire game industry shakes to its foundations.
The same goes for Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy, a collection of three classic Grand Theft Auto games, but revamped for modern game consoles. A re-release, fully equipped with improved graphics and slightly tighter gameplay. Gamers from all over the world couldn’t stop talking about the bundle in recent weeks, and the videos that Rockstar released as a warm-up definitely tasted like more.
Criticism
The fiery enthusiasm is gone the day after the bundle’s launch. Gamers are furious, because in their eyes Rockstar has rushed the so-called ‘remasters’. For example, the games are very disappointing graphically, the character models do not resemble anything and there are various problems with the audio, it sounds, among other things. Rockstar Games even had to quickly bring back the PC version because it didn’t work at all.
On Metacritic, a website where critics and gamers can give their unvarnished opinion, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy gets the full blast. Thousands of disappointed gamers express their dismay at the quality of the remasters. “I wanted to write something creative and funny, but decided it wasn’t worth my time. If Rockstar doesn’t care, why do I?’ writes one of them. ‘Absolutely disastrous remaster. Shame on you, Rockstar. This really isn’t possible!’ rants another.
With a user rating of 0.9 on Metacritic (PlayStation version), the collection of games is one of the lowest scoring games on the review collection site. The average of professional reviewers is still barely sufficient for the PlayStation: a 5.8 based on 27 reviews. According to Gamer.nl, one of the largest game websites in the Netherlands, Rockstar is guilty of ‘falsification’. ‘Now these historic games instantly symbolize what a remaster should absolutely not do’, it sounds critical.
The remasters are available for the PC, PlayStation and Xbox consoles, and the Nintendo Switch. The physical versions of the games will hit stores on December 6. The bundle will come to iOS and Android next year.
