Cumo, one of the most popular figures in the US Democratic Party, announced his resignation after an independent investigation concluded that he had sexually harassed at least 11 women. Several fellow party members, including President Joe Biden, asked him to step down.
Andrew Cuomo fell. The New York state governor finally gave in to the growing avalanche of voices calling for his resignation after becoming embroiled in a sexual harassment scandal in which the accusations have grown stronger.
Cuomo announced this Tuesday, August 10, that he will leave his post, just a week after the New York Attorney General’s Office published a report that concluded that the politician had harassed at least eleven women in different ways.
The investigation, which lasted five months and does not involve criminal charges for now, began as a result of the complaints of several victims and found that Cuomo groped, kissed without consent and made inappropriate comments even some workers of his Administration, in addition to taking revenge on one of the women who pointed it out.
Through a televised speech, Cuomo insisted on his innocence, although he assumed “responsibility” for having offended some women through acts that he defines as “jokes” or “attempts to be affectionate.”
“I think that, given the circumstances, the best way to help is to take a step back and let the government be able to govern again,” the politician justified.
Following the report of the Prosecutor’s Office, several voices of the Democratic Party called for his resignation, including the president of the United States, Joe Biden. Some of his colleagues even threatened impeachment if Cuomo did not step down.
On August 24, second-in-command Kathy Hochul will replace Cuomo until December 2022, when her term expired. Hochul will become the first woman to hold the leadership of the New York Governorate.
