Three races from the end of the 2021 world championship, the world championship challenge between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton it is still very open to any scenario, as evidenced by the 14-point advantage of the Dutch Red Bull over his rival Mercedes. With Formula 1 starting its absolute debut in Qatar, several former drivers have expressed their opinion on who will be the next world champion, doing it on the basis of their own experience or, more simply, of personal feelings.
Among these opinions, not even that of a motorsport legend like the American was missing Mario Andretti, which in turn rose to the top of the world in 1978. In the course of an exclusive interview given to gpblog.com, the 81-year-old indicated his preference for Verstappen, thus specifying the reasons for this consideration:
“Obviously Hamilton fans would like him to win the title – commented Big Foot – he has already won seven, and it was fantastic. However, I personally believe it is Max to deserve it more, also because he was quite unlucky in three games, particularly in Azerbaijan; there he punctured after gaining a big advantage over his rivals, and because of this he was not even able to finish in the points. Overall, if you look at the performance, I think he is the one who deserves it the most. Said this – he concluded – that’s not how sport works, even if sometimes it’s a bit unfair ”.
