Draghi, Mattarella, Casini or … Mario Andretti? In these hours in which Italian politics is in turmoil – also showing a certain inadequacy, it must be said – for the election of the President of the Republic, during the first five votes we have seen and heard a succession of names that are unlikely or not.
Among these, during the fifth call on Friday 28 January, one dear to the colors of our country emerged: that of Mario Andretti. Born in Motovun in the then province of Pola, in Istria, on February 28, 1940, Andretti emigrated to America at the end of the second world championship conflict, finding luck as a pilot. After the successes on the American ovals, Andretti first landed in the world sports prototypes and then landed in Formula 1 in 1968.
His first full season dates back to 1975, the antechamber of that extraordinary ride that led him to the 1978 world title at the wheel of the Lotus. In a mournful 1982 for Ferrari, Andretti is called back to Formula 1 by Ferrari to compete in the Italian Grand Prix, where he wins pole position on Saturday and a third place under the checkered flag.
A figure who in the USA is like a living legend, after learning that he had received a vote during the election of the President of the Republic, Andretti confessed on Twitter that he feels ready for the post.
Obviously, everything has the connotations of the joke. But, surely, a smile from the Formula 1 fans was snatched at hearing the name of Mario Andretti by the President of the Chamber Roberto Fico.
