It was not enough for him to have conquered practically any type of trophy on the track, between Europe and America: Mario Andretti, the hero of two worlds in motorsport, was one of the surprising protagonists also in the election for the president of the Republic which is taking place in these days in Rome. It’s joking, of course, but not that much. The Italian-American legend, world champion in F1 in 1978 and in IndyCar in 1984, in addition to having won the Indianapolis and Daytona 500 miles, has in fact rreceived a preference during the fifth vote for the election of the Italian head of state, which took place this afternoon.
The vote received by the 81-year-old former pilot, born in Motovun in 1940, in what was at the time the Kingdom of Italy, remained isolated and therefore was counted among those ‘missing’, but obviously it made many fans of engines. Andretti himself then intervened on the story, with the ironic spirit that distinguishes it. The champion in fact learned through a tweet of the IRCI (Regional Institute of Istrian Fiumano Dalmata Culture) of the vote that had been attributed to him. At this point, still on the popular social network, the former Ferrari driver commented on the episode between the serious and the humorous. Inevitable, for a ‘racer’ like him, to ask for insights also on the final result: “I accept – wrote Andretti – And let me know if you winor”. After all, in his career, of successes that have unraveled intricate situations, Piedone has collected several.
