At number fourteen on Larra Street in Madrid, the twentieth edition of the Diario Madrid Journalism Award was presented to the writer Andrés Trapiellorecognized for its commitment to the free press and freedom of expression. The president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, presented the award to Trapiello and highlighted that “democracy needs a free and brave press.”

“With the Trapiello award we also celebrate free journalism, in a complicated time, because freedom and the rule of law are also complicated, as are coexistence and Spain itself as a nation,” said the Madrid president. Rafa Latorre He was in charge of delivering a few words dedicated to Trapiello, who he highlighted as “a writer who has turned his life into an imposing literary monument.” “He is one of the last men to take words seriously.”

Trapiello also took the floor to thank him for the award and underline the importance of truth. «Journalists are not workers with an unstable profession, but people who have to deal with the most unstable reality of all, which is the truth. The same thing ends up happening to the truth without freedom as that prodigious Diario Madrid that tried to tell reality as it was and not as that Regime wanted it to be told.

The jury for this edition was chaired by the writer Manuel Vicent, and included Miguel Ángel Aguilar, president of the Diario Madrid Foundation; José Vicente de Juan, vice president of the Diario Madrid Foundation; the journalists Nativel Preciado; Román Orozco and Javier Fernández del Moral. Also Alfredo Jiménez-Millas, general director of CM Vocento; Andrea Aguilar, journalist from El País; Rosa Cullell, journalist at Crónica Global and TVE; Victoria Carvajal Ricardo Cayuela, Mexican editor and writer; Karina Sainz Borgo, writer and columnist for the newspaper ABC; Lara Siscar, writer and journalist at RTVE; Javier Rioyo, Spanish journalist, screenwriter and film director; Juan de Oñate, director of the Association of European Journalists; and Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón, film director.
