The geopolitical expert comments on the conflict between Russia and Ukraine every day in the press
Professor, at dawn on the ninth day, at what point is the night of the war?
«Today there are two apparently conflicting news items that have a logical thread, and they concern the posture of NATO. Which on the one hand confirms that it does not want to carry out no-fly zone missions in the Ukrainian skies as they would undoubtedly lead to a collision with Russian aircraft. On the other hand, political and military contacts with Sweden and Finland are strengthening and let us remember that just two days ago Russia had defined the possibility that these two nations could become an integral part of the Atlantic alliance unacceptable.
Now is it Russia that must decide how NATO can enlarge the alliance?
“Of course not, for this very reason what we have to ask ourselves now is which world we want to live in. If in a world where to guide the politics of a nation are governments and parliaments legitimately elected in a free way or we must supinely accept that foreign policy choices must be imposed on the basis of threats of violence and repression by other nations. If today we give in on foreign policy, tomorrow it will be on domestic policy ».
So what will the next step be?
“We are doing everything possible to try to minimize the risk of a conflict. It seems obvious that to some extent our military and political posture will derive from Putin’s attitude, but it must be clearly stated that there is no diplomatic opening: not because he does not want to find himself on the Western side, but because Putin is very resolute in his pursue its own objectives, many of which are not yet known ».
Is peace now an unattainable goal?
«We are obviously all in favor of peace only a madman may not be, but peace must be made in two. Otherwise it is only surrender ».
