In light of recent events in the context of War in Ukraineone might believe that behind the decision of Disney + to remove Anastasiaanimated feature film released in 1997 and set in a post-October Revolution Russia, from its catalog there was an act of solidarity towards the Ukrainian people.
The truth, however, is another. It is neither an act of condemnation towards the nation governed by Vladimir Putin, nor of an act, precisely, of solidarity with Ukrainian civilians, exhausted by the war. It is therefore a decision linked to rights.
As often happens, just think of the Sony-Disney controversy relating to Marvel films starring Spider-Man, the entertainment giant is sometimes forced to cut from its catalog films or TV series made in collaboration with other production companies or, as in this case, made by production companies then purchased. This time, unfortunately, it happened with Anastasia.
The animated film, in fact, was produced by 20th Century Foxa production company purchased by the company Disney in 2019. Before landing on Disney +, Anastasia was available, in the US, on HBO Max. Finally, from March 18, it will be available on StarzUS pay channel.
For the record, we confirm that this decision remains confined, at the moment, only to the American territory, it remains to be seen if and when the same thing will happen in Italy. We look forward to further news directly from the entertainment giant.
Meanwhile, Disney strongly condemns Putin’s actions in Ukraine: the films branded by the “Dream Factory”, Disney itself, Marvel or Fox, will not be released on Russian soil. A strong, dutiful and, unfortunately, necessary stance in support of the Ukrainian people, scourged by the war born at the behest of Vladimir Putin.
At this point, the question remains whether and how much the film will be available again on Disney +at least in the American catalog, since in Italy, as mentioned, the film is still available for viewing without any problems whatsoever.
