How much will the PlayStation 5 Pro sell? It’s hard to say. Judging by the reactions of a certain segment of gamers, very little. Some analysts, however, believe that things will go differently and that Sony’s new mid-generation console will deliver results in line with those of the PlayStation 4 Pro.
According to Niko Partners in particular, PlayStation 5 Pro will exceed 10 million units sold, for approximately 10% of total sales of the PS5 console family. Ampere Analysis instead estimated sales of 12.8 million units by 2029, a forecast based precisely on PS4 Pro sales, which represented 12% of total PS4 sales.
What Sony Wants
Niko Partners expects a “greater global reach” for PS5 Pro than PS4 Proespecially with regions like Asia and the Middle East seeing a “growing middle class willing to invest in high-end entertainment.”
PlayStation is the leading console brand in Asia excluding Japan and the MENA region. Nintendo Switch Dominates in Japanwith 60% of overall console sales, but at the same time the country is the leader in terms of PS5 units sold across Asia (more than 6 million as of September 2024).
According to Niko Partners, Sony wants to achieve the following goals with PS5 Pro:
- Having premium hardware to advertise as the most technologically advanced console on the market, especially considering that Xbox has given up on the competition and has not presented anything similar.
- Increase ARPU (average revenue per user) and profit margins of the console business, in the face of slowing growth of the installed base in recent years.
According to Niko Partners, PS5 Pro is aimed at PS5 early adopters and “players insensitive to price“. In short, wealthy people who don’t mind spending more to get the best possible performance. The base PS5 will remain the main entry point for most users, but analysts don’t expect Sony to lower the price of its hardware this year or in the first half of 2025.
