In human communities shame is a useful feeling. It prevents activities that are not beneficial to the community.
When you mess up really bad and others get to know about it, you are ashamed. At least yet, I haven’t managed to toss in life so badly that most of the newcomers would watch for a long time. But I can imagine what it might feel like then. It would make sense to change faces, introduce a new name, start over.
