Anagrama publishing house has defended its right to publish the book Hatein which José Breton recognizes for the first time having killed his children, 48 hours after having paralyzed the distribution of the work after the complaint of Ruth Ortiz, the mother of the minors killed.
Anagram has not answered the questions of Eldiario.es about whether the publisher contacted the mother of the minors killed to inform him about the elaboration of the book and its publication.
The seal has not given its version about whether the process of prior communication to the Minors Prosecutor’s Office had omitted to examine whether the content of the book could suppose an interference in the rights of minors, as explained by the Public Ministry on Thursday.
For now, the publication of the book on the murder of minors by his father, which occurred in Córdoba in 2011, is paralyzed by decision of the publishing house and the waiting of a judicial decision in this regard.
At the legal level, the case is a conflict between the rights to freedom of expression and the rights to honor and the privacy of the minors killed. On the ethical level, the book reopens a recurring debate in the editorial and journalistic world on the literary exploration of tragedies and crimes.
It will be a court of first instance of Barcelona that resolves the request of the Minors Prosecutor’s Office of the Catalan capital to suspend, as a precautionary measure, the publication of the book, initially scheduled for next Wednesday, March 26. The Public Ministry requested it on Thursday before the Court of Guard of Barcelona, which refused to resolve the issue and referred it to the Courts of First Instance.
Anagrama has assured that he has decided to wait for “judicial resolutions”, without specifying whether it was the precautionary measure or the bottom of the case, which could take months, before disseminating the book, although it has made it clear that the right to publish the work finds protection in freedom of expression and literary creation that protects the Constitution.
In a statement, the publisher has stated to be “fully aware of the monstrosity of the crimes committed by José Bretón”, and understand “the sensitivity that can raise the exploration of the condition of the murderer who addresses the writer Luisgé Martín in Hate ”.
The editorial mentions other authors who have addressed the murder of minors, such as Emmanuel Carrère in The adversary or Truman Capote in In cold bloodto remember that writers “work with difficult and controversial materials.”
“We reaffirm our commitment to editorial responsibility and freedom of expression, knowing that both must live together. In this sense, we understand that literature can and should address these issues without neglecting the complexity they represent, as Luisgé does in Hate ”, Add Anagrama.
According to the Barcelona seal, the work of Luisgé Martín “tries to elucidate extreme violence, the conditions in which it occurs and the philosophical and ethical implications of cruelty as a drive in the human”, although it emphasizes that “the literary treatment of Hate He moves away and rejects any intention that is not to present to the reader the evil of the murderer without justifying or exchanging the crime but on the contrary, showing his horror. ”
In an interview on Radio Córdoba, Ruth Ortiz has explained that he has only read the content From the interview with Breton that is part of the book, and that has lived as if I received a message directly from the murderer of his children: “He gets to me; I have not reached a letter to the mailbox, but it comes to me.” “The murderers have no right to alter an apex the memory of the victims,” he added.
