TOKYO (Reuters) – Brazil secured its four beach volleyball doubles – two for men and two for women – in the round of 16 of the Tokyo Olympic Games, despite the defeat of Ana Patrícia and Rebecca in their third and final match of the stage of classification, against North American Kelly Claes and Sarah Sponcil, by 2 sets to 1, partial 21-17, 19-21 and 11-15.
The Brazilians were classified as one of the two best third placed in the groups, avoiding the recap.
“We started the match very well, we had a very nice first set. We came to the game knowing that it would be a very difficult duel because they have a very organized game, they have a different way of playing, they use a lot of second ball, so you have to keep adjusting your defensive system all the time, waiting for the second ball from Kelly Claes”, said Ana Patricia, according to a press release from Time Brasil.
The other female duo classified for the round of 16 are Agatha and Duda. They passed second in Group C.
In men’s, Alison and Alvaro Filho, in Group D, and Evandro and Bruno Schmidt, in Group E, advanced to the round of 16 in first position. The pairs await the definition of the playoff duels to meet their opponents.
