Among the elements that contributed to making the 2021 season one of the craziest ever is the brace of the McLaren in Monza. An unpredictable one-two, favored by the accident between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, which is a source of statistical insights. Let’s start with the most important fact: it is only the second time in the history of Formula 1 that the only double win of the season brings the signature of a team off the podium of the constructors’ classification. This circumstance had not happened since 1997, and McLaren was the only one to hit the double. It was the Jerez de la Frontera Grand Prix and also on that occasion there was an accident between the two title contenders (Michael Schumacher’s famous turn to Jacques Villeneuve). Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard, aided by the Canadian himself – who slowed down in the last corners – brought the Woking team to fourth place in the team standings, just like Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo. McLaren fans do the begging, because in the next two years the Silver Arrows won the World Cup.
It is interesting to note how in the history of Formula 1 only eight times a team has managed to score a double without being able to reach the top three at the end of the year: in addition to the aforementioned cases of 2021 and 1997 and excluding 2007 (when McLaren were removed all points for the Spy Story), it happened in 1998 (double Jordan at Spa), 1987 (brace Ferrari in Adelaide), 1983 (double McLaren in Long Beach), 1982 (brace Brabham in Montreal), 1974 (double Brabham at the Österreichring) and 1972 (double Ferrari at the Nürburgring).
