The Undersecretary of Health of Mexico, Hugo Lopez-Gatell, came to Argentina to learn about the country’s experience with the Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine, which began to be applied at the end of December.
The information was confirmed at a press conference by the Mexican president himself, Manuel López Obrador, who also said that the official will meet with Alberto Fernández. López-Gatell is accompanied by Efraín Guadarrama, general director of American Regional Organizations and Mechanisms.
“You are going to see the experience of the vaccine that is being applied in Argentina, to see the protocols, to see the technical and scientific elements, reactions in the application. All that can be obtained from information to see if this vaccine can also be acquired, to see if we can acquire it, “explained AMLO.
“But first to do the review, the exploration to see if for urgent reasons, as is being done in other cases, we acquire it, because we need to vaccinate and have enough vaccines,” the head of the federal Executive clarified in the daily conference that make the media before.
The Mexican president reported that 5,000 people are being vaccinated per day in his country, but assured that he needs to speed up the process.
“Now we are vaccinating an average of 4,500 or 5,000 people a day and we have doses, but we are going to intensify the vaccination and we require more. The February and March order is about to be made to Pfizer, we are looking at the CanSino vaccine and this possibility of AstraZeneca, “he said.
Contacts between Argentina and Mexico regarding the pandemic are not new. Laboratories in both countries are involved in the production and distribution of AstraZeneca’s vaccine in the region.
As Alberto Fernández had reported, AstraZeneca signed an agreement with the Foundation of the Mexican businessman Carlos Slim to produce between 150 and 250 million vaccines, which would be available by the first half of 2021, taking into account the results of phase III studies and regulatory approvals.
