Madrid capital has 8,900 kilometers of streets, totaling more than 9,000, and only a few have regained a certain normality: 404 kilometers of 1,423 streets, after the weekend storm. In addition, 105 kilometers of “pedestrian walkways” have been set up. The City Council has created an interactive map which is updated regularly and allows you to check which streets are already free of snow. A team of 6,220 people, made up of Emergencies, a cleaning team and members of the Military Emergency Unit, tries to clear the main roads. Among them are the main arteries of the capital and many of those that link the different districts with the center or the M-30. Also, are already operational, for example, the Gran Vía, the Prado-Recoletos-Castellana axis, the Ronda de Atocha and the Ronda de Toledo, the General Ricardos street, the Albufera avenue, the Poblados and Andalucía avenues.
In a statement, the Consistory emphasizes that, after carrying out “the largest deployment ever made in Spain” to mitigate the effects of the storm Filomena, “basic mobility” has been returned to the city, opening at least one traffic lane in all the “main roads” of the city.
For the removal of snow, “more than 220 machines such as blades, shovels and salt and brine spreaders have been used”, and in the case of pedestrian walkways “it has had to be done manually, with considerable effort. by the cleaning operators, using a pick and shovel ”.
The Pozuelo de Alarcón City Council has also created a map where the evolution of its streets can be consulted in real time. Thus, streets such as Almansa, Antonio Becerril, Avenida de Europa, Juan XXIII, Camino Cerro de los Gamos, Francia, Leopoldo Calvo Sotelo, Zurbarán, M-502, M-503 from Pablo VI to the M- have been cleared of snow. 515, M-511 to Ciudad de la Imagen, among others. The Madrid City Council insists on the importance of removing the snow as soon as possible, before it freezes due to the frosts foreseen this week, and for this “the collaboration of the neighbors is requested and that the great difficulty of the important works is understood that remain to be done until the end of this emergency situation ”. In addition, Madrid takes the opportunity to thank the “important collaboration of other Administrations and companies specialized in the installation and disposal of machinery”, and specifically the snow removal equipment sent from the Ministry of Public Works and the autonomous regions of Murcia and Andalusia.
The mayor, José Luis Martínez Almeida, and the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, have called on citizens to “stay at home” and have warned that mobility for private vehicles will not be achieved, at least “until the end” of this week. For this reason, the mayor asks the people of Madrid not to use the private vehicle and leave “the lanes open so that the emergency public services can continue working.”
