Srekesh Kumar, 45, was taken to a private clinic after being hit by a motorbike in Moradabad, east of New Delhi.
Upon arrival at the clinic, a doctor announced that Kumar was dead, and on Friday he was transferred to a public hospital for an autopsy.
“The emergency doctor examined him, and no trace of life was found, and therefore he was declared dead,” the hospital’s medical director, Rajendra Kumar, told AFP on Sunday.
The body was kept in a cold room until the family arrived six hours later.
The hospital director added: “When a team of the police and his family came to start the administrative procedures for the autopsy, it was found that he was still alive, but he fell into a coma.”
The director of the hospital commented, considering what happened a “miracle”, knowing that the investigation is still underway to find out the cause of the wrong diagnosis.
