In Russia, they began to treat moving within the country differently. Depending on the periods of their lives, people tend to change their place of residence. Denis Sokolov, Chairman of the Urban Land Institute in Russia, spoke about the change in the minds of Russians to Lente.ru in the framework of the New Society project.
The expert described an important trend that has developed over the past few years: Russians began to move from megacities to other places, including regional centers. In their youth, people tend to large cities, however, with the advent of a family, they think about the quality of life and try to create comfortable living conditions for themselves and for children.
“And this is very important – what the Russians have learned now: that there are different periods in life that can be spent in different places,” Sokolov said.
Currently, the country is undergoing a redistribution of population flows. People choose locations that “more or less correspond to their lifestyle, way of doing things.” The most popular are the southern regions, the specialist linked this trend with the peculiarities of the country’s historical development.
“Russian people have always been deprived of the sea and their own land. This desire – to have your own home on the seaside – dominates now. A person can choose a lifestyle. If you don’t like theaters, why do you need to live in Moscow or St. Petersburg? ” – explained Sokolov.
Earlier, experts confirmed that there is an active outflow of residents from Moscow. In 2018, 30-50 thousand people left the capital. This figure was considered amazing, since over the course of decades, from 100 to 200 thousand people came to the capital every year. The incident is already called “bleeding of the city.” The situation was aggravated by the coronavirus pandemic, when residents of megacities were given the opportunity to work remotely.
The tendency to move has become one of the central themes of the New Society cycle, a large-scale project of Lenta.ru dedicated to the changes that have already begun in Russia or will occur in the coming decades. They talk about the attitude of Russians to the environment, consumption processes, work schedules and the impact of society on climate change.
