Today, Thursday, the United Nations General Assembly elected Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama and Somalia to membership in the 15-member UN Security Council for a two-year term from January 1, 2025.
The Security Council is the only body affiliated with the international organization that can make legally binding decisions, such as imposing sanctions and authorizing the use of force. The Council includes five permanent member states with veto power: Britain, China, France, Russia, and the United States.
The remaining ten non-permanent members are elected by the General Assembly of the international organization.
Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama and Somalia will replace Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Switzerland and Mozambique.
To ensure geographical representation, seats are allocated to regional groups. But even if candidate countries run unopposed in their group, they must win the support of more than two-thirds of the members of the General Assembly.
Denmark received 184 votes, Greece 182, Pakistan 182, Panama 183, and Somalia 179 votes.
