A major US Food and Drug Administration advisory panel voted Wednesday unanimously to recommend that both the Moderna and Pfizer-Biontech vaccines for COVID-19 obtain emergency use authorization for children 6 months to 5 years old.
Children younger than 5 years old are the last group that cannot receive vaccinations. The vote means that these young Americans are one step closer to receiving Covid-19 vaccines, according to the American news website Axios.
Early last week, the FDA released its analysis showing doses from both companies are “safe and effective.”
If all goes according to plan, officials said, vaccines may become available as soon as possible, possibly on June 21, according to Axios.
Although children face a limited risk of contracting the virus, they are a vulnerable group and many parents are keen to protect them from the potentially fatal disease, Bloomberg News reported.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, children and infants under 5 years old account for about 442 cases of the more than 1 million deaths related to COVID-19 in the United States.
However, the rate of hospitalization for this age group is still the highest among the youth groups under the age of 18, at 2.5 per 100,000 people, which confirms the importance of providing them with vaccinations.
