President Andrés Manuel López Obrador commented at the La Mañanera conference this Monday that in meeting with Elizabeth Sherwood RandallWhite House National Security Advisor, discussed the immigration issue with the United States to coordinate its strategy to reduce the flow of people seeking to cross the border and combat human trafficking.
“We are working in a coordinated manner, of course we do not take our finger off the line so that there is US government investments in poor countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, address the causes.”
The president assured that they must combat the causes to control the illegal migratory flow, which in December 2023 caused a crisis on the border between the United States and Mexico, due to the excessive arrival of thousands of Central Americans.
“Also assist in the protection of migrants, order the migratory flow (…) I hope that the citizens of the United States become aware and internalize the fact that there is a legal cause that was opened, that was put into practice, since the arrival of President Biden so that people do not have to take risks crossing Mexico and that he can do a procedure from his country of origin in case he wants to obtain a work visa in the United States,” he indicated.
He revealed that he discussed the issue of the flow of Americans to Mexico with President Biden. “Many Americans are coming to live in Mexico,” she said and revealed that he joked about “being more rigorous in issuing visas to Americans.”
Regarding the relationship with the northern country, AMLO said that “there are many ties of friendship, of coexistence,” he mentions (…) “I am very optimistic about Mexico’s relationship with the United States in the future.”
