Mexico City.- The Employers’ Confederation of the Mexican Republic (Coparmex) assured that the still President Andrés Manuel López Obrador will leave the country with weak public finances, high polarization and concentration of power.
In a review of the outgoing Government, Coparmex recognized that there was progress in improving workers’ income and labor policies.
However, he also spoke about security failures, describing the Sexennium as the most violent in history. “Throughout this Administration, solid fiscal discipline was shown, which has given certainty to investors and rating agencies. However, an increase in public spending for social programs and priority works meant that in 2024 we reached a deficit of 5.9 percent of GDP, the highest in two decades,” he highlighted.
He added that in the Pre-Criteria for the 2025 Budget, the Ministry of Finance committed to reducing the public deficit to 3 percent of GDP.
Coparmex considered that it will be extremely important to meet these expectations when the 2025 budget is presented in October to give certainty to rating agencies and investors that the deficit will be controlled. Another relevant aspect for the employer sector is that the political climate has been characterized by growing polarization. This, he said, has not only affected social cohesion, but has made governance and decision-making based on consensus difficult. For this reason, he called on Claudia Sheinbaum’s Administration to promote an environment of dialogue and respect between the various political actors. Coparmex reiterated its concern about the reforms promoted by the federal Executive. Another of the most worrying aspects of recent years has been the accelerated process of constitutional reforms promoted by the federal Executive, Morena and their allies. “For the most part, they did not have the consensus of the opposition, breaking with the democratic tradition of recent decades. A clear example is the recent reform of the Judiciary, which for the first time in 40 years, was carried out without the support of the opposition, he stated. He added that this advance of the legislative steamroller has allowed a concentration of power in the Presidency of the Republic, eliminating counterweights and weakening the independence of autonomous bodies. The employer sector emphasized that security continues to be the greatest challenge. of the Country. Although there have been efforts by the Government to confront organized crime, the reality is that the strategy has not given the expected results “The current six-year term was the most violent in the history of Mexico, with more than 191 thousand homicides. and 51 thousand missing people,” he quantified. Coparmex urged the new Government to promote an economic policy based on legal certainty, the strengthening of the internal market, and the diversification of public investment to take advantage of opportunities such as nearshoring. Also to rebuild the health and education system, increasing the budget to levels that ensure adequate coverage and quality for the entire population. In addition to reformulating the security strategy to reduce violence and guarantee respect for human rights.
