Mexico City.- The Mexican president, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador announced this Monday that the National Water Comission (Conagua) of your Government will no longer grant concessions of the liquid to private companies in states affected by the droughtparticularly in the north of the country.
“Conagua is no longer going to give, grant concessions, but it also has to do with the state and municipal authorities, that they take care of these resources,” the president declared in his morning press conference.
AMLO made this announcement after receiving questions about what his government will do to avoid another water crisis like the Montereythe second most populous city and home to some of the largest industries in the country, where the inhabitants do not have water most of the day.
In Mexico, there are more than 520,000 permits from public and private entities to exploit water, according to the Public Registry of Water Rights (Repda) of the With waterempowered by the National Water Law to grant liquid concessions to individuals.
Drought in Nuevo Leon
The president acknowledged that the population and businessmen have become aware after the crisis in Montereycapital of Nuevo León, but warned that the concessions should be stopped.
“The problem will never be solved, if they are going to continue granting concessions right and left, you have to think that not only is capital important, but the labor force is important, and water is important in a productive process” , he stated.
He also mentioned that his government is analyzing reforming the National Water Law to eliminate the concessions, but that first it is “seeking to convince, persuade, not impose anything, and people are understanding it.”
On other occasions, López Obrador warned of the possibility of stopping the production of beer and soft drinks in Nuevo León to redirect water to homes.
The president now recalled his government’s efforts to stop the construction of a Constellation Brands brewery plant in Mexicali, capital of northern Baja California, to later move it to Veracruz, in the southeast of the country.
“70% of Mexico’s water is in the southeast and there is land, and there is a workforce, and there is infrastructure,” he argued.
