Democrats are losing the culture war in key areas, according to a Politico-Morning Consult poll released Wednesday, in part due to pandemic fatigue and mistrust of the federal government’s response to the Covid-19 crisis. 19.
While Democratic voters are still divided on this issue, most are in favor of lifting the mask requirement, poll data show.
“Democrat governors are trying to get ahead of the fatigue of the pandemic by suspending mandatory use of masks throughout the territory. The country is moving more and more in that direction,” Politico said. “49% of voters want these mandates removed, while 43% say it is too early for states to rescind measures related to masks.”
The survey results also found that support for combining masks and vaccines has dropped significantly in recent months.
“Yes, a plurality of voters (49%) still feel that local governments should encourage Covid-19 vaccines and masks in enclosed public spaces, but this has dropped 7 points since September,” the poll found. “At the height of the pandemic, anti-mask sentiment was a marginal obsession limited to the right. But with the wave of the omicron waning, that position is now mainstream – and it’s becoming more popular.”
Pandemic frustration has seeped into other areas of culture as well, and Republicans have successfully waged a war against critical racial theory, opening borders and police funding, according to partial poll results by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. cited by Politico. Even in cities with more left-wing voters, parents are fed up with pandemic politics.
“In San Francisco on Tuesday, there was new evidence of what happens when Covid fatigue spirals into culture wars,” the Politico report states. “Residents of the progressive bastion voted overwhelmingly to remove three education commissioners who angered parents last year, focusing on renaming schools rather than reopening them.”
The Politico survey comes on the heels of a recent Monmouth University survey of 794 US adults, which also found growing frustration among Americans in the federal government’s handling of the pandemic.
About 70% of respondents agreed that “it’s time to accept that Covid is here to stay, and we just need to get on with our lives”.
The poll, conducted by phone Jan. 20-24, found that while many Americans are still worried about the virus, they are frustrated with the government’s response. The survey also found that a significant portion of the population is concerned about the vaccine.
While nearly half of American adults (45%) report receiving a booster shot, a significant number (37%) still refuse to do so – which includes 17% who oppose even the initial vaccination.
Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Research Institute, said that while concerns about Covid-19 have not gone away, there is a growing realization that the virus cannot be controlled in the way that experts initially predicted.
“We still see public support for maintaining some degree of security around Covid. However, there appears to be an acknowledgment that the federal measures were not effective, or at least not widely accepted,” Murray said.
Approval ratings for President Joe Biden’s response to Covid-19 have dropped significantly in recent months.
“Only 43% say Biden did a good job, while 53% say he did a poor job – the first time his rating on this metric has been below average since taking office,” the survey found. “Public opinion on how the president handled Covid was evenly divided a month ago (46% good work and 46% bad work) and has been consistently positive in previous polls.”
