The Defense Committee report warned that the British government would never be able to achieve military or strategic readiness without urgent reforms to resolve the recruitment crisis and significantly enhance its stock of weapons and ammunition.
This review was followed by former defense ministers warning that the armed forces had been hollowed out since 2010 and that they would exhaust their capabilities after only two months of clashing with their rivals.
According to the British newspaper The Telegraph, 155 mm artillery shells, which are considered one of the most important types of ammunition, can only be produced by one machine in the United Kingdom. The British forces do not have sufficient stocks of them.
Also, only 5 soldiers are appointed for every 8 who leave the army, as approved by the Ministry of Defense.
In conjunction with this, a report issued by the Policy Exchange think tank raised concerns about the potential security threat to the United Kingdom from the presence of Russian, Chinese and Iranian entities in the Republic of Ireland.
The report accuses Dublin of free exploitation of European defence, and suggests that the United Kingdom expand its air and naval presence in Northern Ireland to confront the growing Russian threat to its western flank.
The report, according to The Guardian, highlights the acute maritime threat posed by Russian tactics targeting undersea networks and pipelines, in addition to the presence of Russian warships.
On the other hand, the British aircraft carrier “Queen Elizabeth” will not sail as scheduled to lead NATO's largest maneuvers off the Arctic coast of Norway, due to a technical defect, and will be replaced by the aircraft carrier “Prince of Wales.”
Amid growing fears of war with Russia or the outbreak of World War III, The Sun newspaper reported that Britain will test a Trident 2D5 ballistic missile from the Vanguard nuclear submarine, which is worth 4 billion pounds sterling.
The submarine was spotted last month in Port Canaveral, Florida.
