22-year-old American Sydney McLaughlin broke her own world record in the 400-meter hurdles on Saturday. During the American Championships in Eugene (Orgegon), where the World Championships will also take place next month, she raced to a time of 51.41, five hundredths faster than the 51.45 with which she became Olympic champion in Tokyo last year.
McLaughlin took the lead early in the final and didn’t give the rest of the field a chance. With the win, she secured her participation in the world championships. ,,I knew anything was possible”, she said after her race. Britton Wilson finished second at 1.67 seconds behind and Shamier Little was third in 53.92.
“We’re going to represent the US well, we’re all going to try to get on the podium,” McLaughlin said.
The Dutch Femke Bol, who won the bronze in Tokyo, is also an important competitor of the American in the 400 meters hurdles. She has the fastest time 52.03.
