The American law firm Kobre & Kim will represent the interests of Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich in court in the case of the arrest by Washington of two businessman’s planes. This is reported by the newspaper on July 6 The Wall Street Journal.
It is noted that in order to cooperate with Abramovich, representatives of Kobre & Kim registered as foreign agents, because the US Department of Justice requires information about political work with foreign governments, individuals and legal entities.
According to the newspaper, the company will be the first from the United States to take the side of a Russian in its country after the aggravation of the situation in Ukraine.
Kobre & Kim said they agreed to represent Abramovich because of his “participation in peace negotiations and humanitarian activities.” According to them, the solution of legal issues is necessary to continue the work of a businessman in the direction of establishing relations between the Russian Federation and Ukraine.
In June, a federal judge in New York signed a warrant authorizing the arrest by the US Department of Justice of two of Roman Abramovich’s planes, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner and a Gulfstream G650ER, the first of which is in Dubai and the second in Russia. At the same time, these aircraft were registered by companies in Cyprus, Jersey and the British Virgin Islands.
On June 8, it was reported that the lawyers of the Russian businessman intend to challenge the EU sanctions imposed on him. The defense regards the sanctions as an “act of discrimination”. Abramovich was supported by the head of the Ukrainian delegation at the peace talks with the Russian Federation, David Arakhamii. He pointed out that the billionaire contributed to the negotiation process. In particular, with his participation, agreements were reached on humanitarian corridors, through which more than 400 thousand civilians were then evacuated.
On March 10, the businessman was included in the UK sanctions list. His assets were frozen, individuals and legal entities of the United Kingdom were forbidden to conduct any transactions with Abramovich. And on March 15, the European Union introduced restrictions against him.
The West began to tighten sanctions against Russia after Putin announced on February 24 a special operation to protect the civilian population in the Donbass. Moscow explained that the tasks of the special operation included the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine, which is necessary to ensure the security of Russia. The decision was made against the backdrop of aggravation in the region as a result of shelling by the Ukrainian military.
