The heads of Hollywood studios began to refuse to distribute their films in Russia. About it informs edition of The Hollywood Reporter.
Analysts emphasize that this decision is directly related to the special operation in Ukraine, the beginning of which was announced on February 24 by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The official position of the studios
However, at the moment, all major film companies refuse to officially comment on the conflict in Ukraine, including the Motion Picture Association of America. Representatives of the Western film industry also acknowledged that the Russian market has been fertile ground for projects for many years.
Walt Disney Company
One of the first in the list of studios that suspended the delivery of their films to Russian cinemas was the Walt Disney Company. They clarified that further decisions will be made based on the situation. It is known that the structure of the media conglomerate includes Marvel, Pixar, Lucasfilm, Maker Studios and others.
Sony
Sony Pictures also paused upcoming theatrical premieres in Russia due to the situation in Ukraine. This decision will also affect the new superhero blockbuster from Marvel “Morbius” with Jared Leto in the title role.
Netflix
The Netflix streaming service refused to broadcast 20 Russian federal channels of the first and second multiplex, despite the requirement of the legislation of the Russian Federation. “Given the current situation, we have no plans to add these channels to our platform,” a Netflix spokesperson said. It is noted that at present the video service is still available for Russian users.
Warner Bros.
Warner Bros. canceled the release of the film “Batman” in Russian cinemas the day before the official premiere. “In light of the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, WarnerMedia is suspending the release of its feature film Batman in Russia,” the statement said. The Russian premiere of the film was expected on March 2.
The Ukrainian Film Academy also called for an international boycott of Russian cinema and the Russian film industry after the start of the operation in Ukraine.
Sources of The Hollywood Reporter emphasize that cinemas in Russia are owned by private individuals. However, many of the media and advertising platforms are owned by the state.
