A Maryland homeowner accidentally burns down his own home after an attempt to tackle a snake infestation failed.
The homeowner had hoped to chase the snakes in the house away with smoke. The fire, which took place on November 23, was therefore not deliberately set. This is emphasized by Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service chief Pete Piringer in a message on Twitter.

The fire in the house on Big Woods Road started in the basement, where the homeowner allegedly started small fires in metal containers. The fire then spread throughout the house. The damage to the house would amount to more than 1 million US dollars (almost 900,000 euros).

“The coal the resident used was too close to combustible materials,” said Piringer. No one was in the home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported. The fire service says it does not know whether or how many hoses survived the fire. According to the spokesperson, it concerns ‘a lot of black snakes’.

One piece of snakeskin and one live snake was found after the incident. The live snake slithered out of the foundation of the house. This snake was caught by the firefighters and was subsequently released into a nearby piece of forest. It would be fairly common in the area to find snakes in the basements of houses, where the critters often shelter from the cold. But to chase away a pest, it is better not to light small fires yourself.
“That is a technique that is unknown to me,” says wildlife biologist Dan Rauch NBC News. “I would definitely advise people to tackle a snake infestation in a different way. Please call a professional first.”
