The multinational will close the one in Martorelles (Barcelona) but assures that its 800 workers will be transferred to other locations
Amazon is in a moment of crisis at the international level that has led it to announce the dismissal of 18,000 workers from its corporate area around the world. In Spain, the logistics center in Martorelles (Barcelona) will close and its 800 employees will have the option of moving to other Spanish centers, the company announced on Wednesday.
The positive part comes from the openings. Amazon will inaugurate two new robotic logistics centers in Spain, one in Zaragoza in March and another in Far d’Empordà (Girona) in April, which will mean the creation of 2,500 permanent jobs in the next three years, according to a statement from the company. The e-commerce giant aims to reach 25,000 permanent workers in Spain by the end of 2025; it currently has around 20,000.
«We continue to invest in our network of operations in Spain to meet customer demand. The new logistics centers in Zaragoza and Girona underline our commitment to the country, stressed Fred Pattje, Amazon’s director of Customer Fulfillment for Spain, France and Italy, in the statement.
In addition, he explained that his operations network is “constantly” evaluated to ensure that it meets the needs of the company and “improve the experience of our employees and customers.” “As part of that effort, we open new centers, upgrade existing facilities or close older centers,” Pattje noted.
The company details that since 2011 it has invested more than 10,500 million euros in Spain and, in the last two years alone, it has opened more than 20 centers in the country, including logistics centers in Castilla-La Mancha, Murcia and the Valencian Community; logistics stations in Catalonia, Madrid, Castilla y León, the Valencian Community, Andalusia and Aragon; Amazon Fresh centers in Valencia, Seville and Zaragoza and the company’s first European same-day delivery center in Madrid.
