Big tech now has 379 renewable energy projects in 21 countries; Brazil is the 1st in South America to receive investment
Amazon announced this Wednesday (21.Sep.2022) that it will expand its renewable energy projects globally to Brazil, India and Poland. Each country will host a solar park. Second communiquéwill be an additional 2.7 gigawatt-hours of clean energy capacity across 71 new projects.
With the new expansion, the big tech now has 202 renewable energy projects in North America, 117 in Europe, 57 in Asia and the Pacific, 1 in the Middle East, 1 in Africa and 1 in South America.
Added together, they are 379 renewable energy projects in 21 countries, 154 of which are wind and solar farms, and 225 solar roof systems. This represents 18.5 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity.
Once operational capacity is fully completed, Amazon’s global portfolio is expected to produce 50,000 gigawatt hours of clean energy. The amount is equivalent to that needed to supply 4.6 million homes in the US annually.
“We are bringing new wind and solar projects online to power our offices, fulfillment centers, data centers and stores, which collectively serve millions of customers around the world. We are on track to achieve 100% renewable energy across our entire business by 2025.”said Amazon Web Services CEO Adam Selipsky.
According to him, “Around the world, countries are looking to accelerate the transition to a clean energy economy”and investments such as that of Amazon “can help speed up” this journey.
In 2021, the company registered 85% renewable energy across all its businesses.
