Deforestation in Brazil’s Amazon has risen to its highest level since 2006. In addition, from August 2020 to July 2021, deforestation was 22 percent higher than in the previous 12 months. This is evident from figures from the Brazilian space research institute INPE, which monitors deforestation in the Amazon with satellites. During the reign of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, deforestation has increased for three consecutive years. This is the first time in 20 years that this has happened.
