The EMMI sections are some of the most loved moments by most people who have played Metroid Dread. However, it appears that DoctorM64, the creator of Another Metroid 2 Remake, he’s not happy with the way these enemies work.
In a recent talk on the KIWI TALKZ podcast, DoctorM64, who was responsible for the AM2R project, a remake of Metroid II, which hit the market shortly before Nintendo and Mercury Steam delivered an official reimagining of the Game Boy title, talked about EMMI, and How is it that this concept does not complement the style of play of Metroid Dread. This is what he mentioned:
“I’m not entirely sure if EMMIs were something that would make sense in Metroid. The concept is amazing, right? But if you mix something like survival horror with a huge monster that can kill you in one hit, you have to feel vulnerable. Think of the early Resident Evils with tank controls and very limited ammo, you stun a couple of zombies, you shot them, but your health is very limited, you feel that tension, that fear.
But all of a sudden, if you’re a space hunter who has very maneuverable moves and you can jump walls and run super fast, that changes the dynamic a lot. Suddenly the monster has to move at the same pace as you and suddenly the glitch state is faster to achieve. So in a run of Resident Evil or any other survival horror, you take a couple of minutes to explore and you see the monster and you try with your very limited resources and mobility to escape and hide and be tactical with your choices. You have time to think and act correctly.
But since Samus is so agile and the real EMMIs have to be more agile than her to compensate, you don’t get those Metal Gear moments where you know stealth and action. You’re basically reacting to things, so it’s a very cat-and-mouse thing that happens so quickly that for once it’s distinct and unique, but it’s also a bit annoying IMHO.”
Although very few people share the opinion of DoctorM64, these are valid criticisms that arise when someone who worked part of his life on a remake of Metroid II may have about something you know quite well. For its part, this developer now works at Moon Studiosthose responsible for Ori and the Will of the Wispsso your knowledge is being used in a great way.
On related topics, new game modes are now available for Metroid Dread. Similarly, Retro Studios shares a new image of Metroid Prime 4.
Editor’s Note:
Actually, everything that DoctorM64 has pointed out as negative is why the EMMI sections are so good for me. You have to react immediately to a danger you can’t stop, and Samus’ moves go hand in hand here.
