The presentation organized by the team was a surprise presentation Alpine to unveil the brand new to the world A522. The car with which the French team will face this 2022 season was not physically present at the unveil as it had already arrived in Barcelona in view of the pre-season tests. However, the team from beyond the Alps has made known the livery with which the car will race. Or better, the liveries. In fact, this is exactly where the news lies: Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon will compete in the first two GPs of the season with a special color scheme, ‘inverted’ compared to the one that will be used throughout the rest of the championship. The reason is the homage made by the team to the new title sponsor of the team, BWT, which had already colored the liveries of Force India-Racing Point pink for years, now Aston Martin.
That of special liveries is a ‘fashion’ that has returned to take hold over the last few seasons, combining marketing interests and tributes linked to special events. A trend that seems also appreciated by the public and enthusiasts, always happy to be able to see some particular colors. During last season it had been the Red Bull in Turkey to pay homage to his own engineer, Honda, using a red-white livery that recalled the colors of the flag of Japan. Originally the tribute was designed specifically for the Suzuka race, but then the calendar altered by Covid forced the Milton Keynes team to change their plans during the race.
In 2020, however, it was the Ferrari, in a very disastrous season, to use a ‘vintage’ livery on the occasion of the Mugello races, in which the Scuderia celebrated the 1000 GPs in Formula 1. That day even the traditionally gray Mercedes Safety Car was dyed red. Right there Mercedes had inaugurated this curious trend in 2019 by competing in Germany with a special coloring, also in this case designed to pay homage to the great tradition of the brand. Going further back in time, the idea of the debutante remains unforgettable BAR in 1999. The team wanted to field two cars of different colors. However, the regulation forbade it, so the two liveries were combined on the same car, with a hinge to join them.
