Alpine skiing Sweden’s Hector slipped to Italy as the Olympic winner’s favorite

Erika Pykäläinen was 46th with her opening bill and was eliminated from the second round.

Swedish Sara Hector became the winner of the women’s grand slalom in the Beijing Winter Olympics no later than Tuesday in Italy.

Hector won the World Cup in Kronplatz after finishing second in Slovakia Petra Vlhova was 0.15 seconds away.

The victory was already the third for Hector in the six grand slalom races of the season. He was in the middle of the second descent to get off the track, but caught up with the rhythm in the last run and was seventh in the round.

That was enough for first place, as Vlhova, who led after the first round, was only 18th on her second bill.

“I was surprised after crossing the finish line because I think I was tinkering here and there,” said Hector, who leads the grand slalom cup.

Finland Erika Pykäläinen was 46th in his opening run and was eliminated in the second round.
