The 2021 Formula 1 season is about to end in Abu Dhabi, where the final GP of this world championship will be held on the Yas Marina track. In addition to archiving this championship, a triptych of events held in the Middle East will also end: from Qatar to the United Arab Emirates, passing through Saudi Arabia. Two events, those of Losail and Jeddah, proved to be particularly positive for theAlpine, almost the protagonist of two podiums won by both drivers: while Fernando Alonso had broken his spell as regards the placement among the top three in Qatar – something he had not been able to do for seven years – Esteban Ocon nearly achieved the same result in the recent Saudi stage.
The Frenchman, who remained in third position throughout the second half of the GP, in fact lost the chance to conquer his second podium of the season by a hair’s breadth, being overtaken by Valtteri Bottas just a few meters from the finish. A naturally unpleasant circumstance for the winner of the Hungarian GP, however, ready to redeem Yas Marina to end a season synonymous with his first success in F1: “It is a strange feeling for me to leave Saudi Arabia for Abu Dhabi – admitted the transalpine – I am proud of what we have achieved in the race with fourth place, but, at the same time, there is slight disappointment not to have brought a trophy with us. We gave everything we had and unfortunately it wasn’t enough to take third place. Throughout my Formula 1 career so far, Abu Dhabi has always been the final race of the season. There is a unique atmosphere in the paddock throughout the weekend as the world championship draws to a close with the title still up for grabs. It will be another night race – he added –, the which is becoming more and more regular in Formula 1. They are always pleasant, and are able to convey different emotions to you under the lights ”.
Mixed feelings that he also experiences Fernando Alonso, ready to make his return to a track that, in 2010, was the scene of one of his greatest sporting nightmares, when he lost the world title – in his first year with Ferrari – remaining stuck behind the Russian Vitaly Petrov. A failure to overtake that opened the doors of the world championship to Sebastian Vettel, in his first of four world championships captured in his career: “I think it was clear for a while that the circuit was quite difficult for overtaking – analyzed the Spanish – And we hope these layout changes can make a difference. It is a shame to encounter difficulties in overtaking in a decisive race for the title, but it is a good track to race on and, if there can be more overtaking, it will naturally be more exciting for us drivers and for everyone who watches us. We love to hit the track in Abu Dhabi, and I’m curious to see if anything will change. I’m always excited to try out new track changes, so we’ll see on Sunday. As for the award of the driver who has made more overtakes in the season – he concluded – we also had some fun fights with Vettel and Räikkönen, who are also vying for this award. Maybe we can have our mini race on Sunday and see who gets the most overtakes ”.
