Clouds over Fernando’s future Alonso in Alpine. The Spanish driver, in fact, wants the team to provide him with at least a competitive car project: making a decent car, like the A522, is not enough for the two-time world champion, who is obviously looking for better. And if he doesn’t find it in France, he can go and ask for it elsewhere.
“My presence is not guaranteed for next season: in the coming weeks I will speak with the team to understand what their expectations will be or how we can develop our project. I feel at home in Alpine, but nothing is guaranteed“, Alonso told reporters, including Carlo Platella for FormulaPassion. The Spaniard also criticized the commissioners for not intervening in the fight between Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez: “At Silverstone I felt more competitive than any other race, especially during qualifying, where we had already had positive feedback on the race pace. Over the course of the GP, and with the management of the tires, I noticed that Leclerc and Perez were still faster than me, but not as fast as in other races. In all honesty, I saw the race only later, on Monday, and I saw all the battle that took place between Leclerc and Perez. It was fantastic to see her on TV and to witness that challenge firsthand. However, at the beginning of the year it was not allowed to go beyond the track, and there would have been a black and white flag, but now things have changed. When you are side by side and push someone off the track there are always different scenarios and it is always very difficult to judge. In any case, we have always been clearly told to respect the white line, which did not happen at Silverstone. I was penalized in Miami for taking advantage of a similar maneuver, while nothing happened at Silverstone, so I’m pretty confused by the interpretation of the regulation. These aspects will need to be discussed in order to have a clearer interpretation“.
“I am enjoying racing in F1 after my return. Obviously I miss winning and fighting for the podium, but I enjoy the challenge against myself, which allows me to express myself at my best. Compared to the last time in F1 it is not the same level of competitiveness: in 2018 I didn’t feel 100%, but now I do. Now I feel in a position to be able to express myself to the fullest, or in any case in a way that no one would expect. I feel like I can do as in the best years of my career, and this is the aspect that makes me most proud from the moment of my return.“, Continued Alonso. “To improve the car’s performance, I think we will have to take a few more steps on the slow corners. We saw it in particular in Baku, where we did well in the fast ones but suffered more in the slower ones. There the AlphaTauri and Aston Martins did well, I think they will do well in Austria too. I don’t think it will be easy for us to be able to fight with Mercedes. They are very well organized, and I am sure they will recover sooner or later. Ours is a medium to long-term program, and we will have to improve much more than they will“.
These, however, are the words of Esteban Or withat the 100th Grand Prix in his career: “I never thought I’d get to the third figure in races, it’s something special, I’m definitely better since I started. I know the car and the sport better, these additional 50 were much better than the first ones. I hope I can collect more great moments. I certainly didn’t have an ideal weekend at Silverstone, we had problems that ended our weekend. Let’s turn the page, forget it, and get a nice result here“.
