Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen Barring major unforeseen events, they will compete for the world title until the last race in Abu Dhabi on a renewed circuit of Yas Marina. An ending that promises to be exciting and that sends back the clock to 2016, the last time in which Yas Marina awarded the world title in that case to Nico Rosberg. For Hamilton it will eventually be the fifth time in his career in which he will find himself fighting for the World Championship in the last race. In the previous four he celebrated on two occasions, in two he chewed bitter. In addition to 2016, the other bitter ending was that of 2007, when he made his F1 debut at the wheel of McLaren in the same garage as a sacred monster like Fernando Alonso, fresh from winning two world titles. At the time, the two McLaren teammates had been at loggerheads for months, with the situation that then transcended in the famous Hungaroring episode and continued with an absence of relationships that favored the final victory of Kimi Raikkonen’s Ferrari.
Alonso is back on that World Cup: “We have certainly all changed since that year. I can only speak for myself, but you sure are different when you are 13 years older than you were then. You are more mature, you see races differently and in their entirety. As I have said many times, I don’t think we were handled very well that year. We had a very competitive package, but we managed to lose against the Ferraris. They were fast, yes, but I don’t think as much as we do. But I still have fond memories of that year. And we hope to be able to go back to those days and fight for the title together“.
The seven-time world champion added: “The battle we had in the past, when we were both younger, was tough against Ferraris. I remember they were very strong then. It is a similar fight to that against Verstappen, but I have never judged a battle more difficult than the other. They have all been difficult in their own way“.
