Almost half of corona patients have complications after hospital discharge
Nearly 50 percent of patients admitted to hospital with Covid-19 leave the ward with at least one complication. Kidney problems or respiratory complaints are the most common, followed by heart problems or neurological consequences, writes medical journal The Lancet friday morning. The study was conducted among more than 73,000 corona patients who were hospitalized between January and August 2020. The largest number of them stayed in a nursing ward.
People with underlying conditions, such as high blood pressure or diabetes, had a higher chance of complications. The researchers also saw more complications in men and older patients. However, the problems also occurred in younger, previously healthy patients. According to the researchers, the resulting problems could have a major effect on health care and social care in the coming years, with consequences for patients’ work and study. The complications were examined at the time of leaving the hospital. It could therefore be that patients recover reasonably well after a few months. The neurological effects experienced by some patients after the coronavirus were noted as one of the most difficult complications.
Internist and professor Joost Wiersinga of the Amsterdam UMC mentions the results of the British research in De Volkskrant Friday “very recognizable”. He thinks that the research can be compared with the picture that can be seen in the UMC. There are no Dutch studies into the complications of corona patients, but according to Wiersinga, the British research can also be applied here: “The care and treatment protocols in both countries are comparable.” However, he emphasizes that serious complications do not only occur after an infection with Covid-19; these also occur after other serious infections, such as blood poisoning or pneumonia.
Welcome to this blog
In this blog keeps NRC the latest news about the corona crisis at home and abroad. These were the most important developments of Thursday 15 July:
- On the corona card of the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), the Netherlands was put on red on Thursday. The province of Groningen is even colored dark red, because the outbreak is relatively worst there. Countries can adjust their rules based on the ECDC map. For example, they can impose stricter conditions on holidaymakers from the Netherlands.
- The number of corona patients in the Hopital being treated has increased over the past 24 hours. On Thursday afternoon, 230 patients with the coronavirus will be in Dutch hospitals, according to figures from the National Coordination Center for Patients Spreading (LCPS). The number of corona patients has increased by 22 since Wednesday afternoon.
- The past 24 hours at the RIVM 11,064 positive corona tests were reported, 606 more than on Wednesday. The total number is therefore back at the level of Christmas 2020. Since the beginning of July, the number of people who test positive in the Netherlands has increased explosively. Young people in particular, who were allowed to visit discotheques again after months of sitting at home, tested positive in recent weeks.
- The summary proceedings that were to be filed against the state on Friday due to the consequences of the new corona measures for the events sector has been suspended. Festival organizer ID&T postpones it for the time being and first enters into discussions with the relevant ministers, together with the parties involved in the summary proceedings.
