Cooking & EatingBakers ready, start baking. Those words sounded again in the baking tent, because the ninth season of Heel Holland Bakt started tonight.
How strange, on a Saturday! André van Duin could hardly handle it. The broadcast of the popular baking program has always been on Sundays. But this season, fans have to keep Saturday night free. “Everything gets used to, including a tent,” said the presenter of All of Holland Bakt, with a nod to the expression ‘you get used to everything except a guy’. He was a little confused about it. Fortunately, episode number 1 did have a theme. “Cake, because you ‘looked’ first on Sunday.”
Van Duin was immediately on a roll with his jokes, but the candidates faced start-up problems. For the signature assignment, the bakers had to process the cake from the theme into a whipped cream cake. Not a dime-a-dozen type of course, it is a competition. The ten candidates were told it had to be their own version. Of course, one ingredient could not be missing from a whipped cream cake (exactly, the whipped cream), but hairdresser Inge immediately had whipped cream that was not good. “Crazy.” Lynn was short. It was stolen, she reported. Zeynab had no problem. Her whipped cream was top notch. Enzo’s lactose-free variant was also approved by Robèrt van Beckhoven and Janny van der Heijden.
Ten shades of pink cookies
Pink cakes, another classic. The typical high school cakes were on the program for the technical assignment. Difficult for the Greek Yannis, who she did not know and had never eaten. “I don’t know what to do”, he said with a laugh. Mary had the same problem with her Scottish background. Not that it went smoothly with the others. “Under smearing”. Many copies looked more like drip cakes. Not dipping, but dripping. “Ten shades of pink”, concluded Van der Heijden upon seeing the dozens of cakes. The jury found few perfect specimens, but Mary and Zeynab’s were praised.
Day two gave new opportunities. A tough assignment because the spectacle had to consist of at least forty madeleines. What should they look like? With a belly of course. “Just like me”, as Van Beckhoven. Such a refined French cake requires quite a bit of technical skills. Especially if you also start experimenting with shapes, as Julian did. He used Saint James ships.
It’s hard enough to make a structure without extra hassle. The bakers went wild with their shapes: the jury judged a peacock, a teapot and a wedding dress. And also ‘just’ a tower, like Tom made. One with ‘top cakes’, Van Beckhoven thought. Lynn’s was just a bit too dry, the jury thought. They were still good that afternoon, the 26-year-old said indignantly. “Taste it for yourself”, Van Beckhoven tipped. Lynn did that, a bit sulking.
Zeynab baked 140 madeleines and was clearly the favorite of the third and final round. Van der Heijden could not admit a mistake. “We have never had such a high level before,” she said about the group. “At the top of the group it is crowded.” The student Zeynab became a master baker, and Siham dropped out.
