All the hospitals in the Region of Murcia have suspended surgeries considered non-urgent to deal with the complicated situation they are already facing due to the disproportionate increase in coronavirus cases in recent days. This was announced on Tuesday by the spokesman for the Covid-19 Monitoring Committee in the Region, Jaime Pérez, who once again warned that hospitals are going to face “very hard” moments in the coming days. The Ministry of Health explained to THE TRUTH that only those operations considered as priorities will be carried out, in addition to emergencies.
The greatest saturation is currently supported by the Morales Meseguer and the Reina Sofía, whose intensive care units are over one hundred percent occupied. In this last hospital, the pressure also increases in the plants, which forced to suspend most of the surgical activity this Monday. From eleven operating theaters for programmed surgery, it has increased to four.
Income is also being derived from the ER, explains the managing director of the Reina Sofía, Juan Antonio Marqués. The situation in the VII-Murcia Este health area, which has this hospital as a reference, is again very complicated, with all the health centers on the red level except one.
87 Covid patients remained admitted to the Reina Sofía yesterday. Of these, 14 are ICU patients, although, given the overflow of the service, two of them were in resuscitation and another two were in the Major Ambulatory Surgery (CMA), enabled for semi-critical patients. Regarding the situation in the plant, there are two wings destined for Covid, although there is already a third plant prepared in the face of the strong increase in income.
A provisional ICU
For its part, in the Morales Meseguer, whose ICU has 18 beds, there were 22 critical Covid patients yesterday. “We have set up a provisional ICU with up to ten beds in the new building of the oncohematological ward,” explained the managing director of this hospital, Andrés Carrillo. 47 coronavirus patients remain on the floor.
On Friday afternoon, and due to the increase in pressure, a new Covid plant was opened – the third one at the moment – and the opening of a fourth is already being prepared.
