“Babour Al-Louh” is the first Algerian dramatic work that deals with the issue of illegal immigration “Al-Harga”, an issue that Algerian television did not address through drama, and it remained the focus of Algerian cinematic works, as it was addressed by Algerian director Merzak Allouache and the late Moussa Haddad in cinematic works only.
A case without limits
The Algerian actor, Mustafa Laribi, who participates in the series as “Nasro”, attributed the controversy over the work to the method of directing and the new artistic vision that he brought as he deals with one of the issues that concern the youth of today and even the government for its human dimension.
Laurabi told Sky News Arabia: “The issue of clandestine immigration does not have a specific nationality and can be applied to many societies. It is an Arab and African phenomenon par excellence, and we have tried to present a work of art away from propaganda.”
The Algerian actor believes that presenting this kind of work requires a great effort, as the series took three full years to complete, which is a rare occurrence in Algerian drama, which suffers from the problem of filming works in the last months before Ramadan due to budgets.
He confirmed to Oreibi that each actor in this series presented a different role from the roles he had previously presented in his previous works.
He said, “I was impressed by the script, especially the role of “Nasro”, which I present for the first time, which is different from my previous roles in the drama.”
controversy and accusations
The series begins by paying tribute to the souls of the victims of illegal immigration, as he wrote in its introduction: “This work is dedicated to the souls of all the young people of Algeria who boarded the death boats, believing that they were a lifeline, so the waves of the seas snatched them from us and took them away.”
The series was about to stop by a decision from the Audiovisual Control Authority, which summoned the managements of the channel displaying Babur al-Louh, and directed a series of inquiries related to the content of the work and its observance of the sanctity of the month of Ramadan.
Actor Abdel-Qader Jerio told “Sky News Arabia”, that the control authority eventually understood the matter, and quickly resolved the problem in the first hours to receive the inquiry, which gave them the right to continue broadcasting the series’ episodes without stopping, amid a lot of confusion in the communication sites. The socialist who is still trying to distort the artwork.
A different generation of actors
The series brings together a group of the most prominent young Algerian actors, led by the actor Abdelkader Jerio, Mohamed Hassani, Suhaila Moallem, Samia Meziane, Ahmed Maddah and Yasmine Ammari, in addition to Mustafa Laribi, Fadela Hashmawi and Aziz Boukroni, and it is directed by Tunisian Nasr El-Din Tashel.
Most of them are young actors born in the eighties, who decided to make a different drama than what public television has shown Algerian viewers for decades.
The young Algerian actor, Mohamed Hassani, who is participating in the series “Babour El Louh,” believes that the creative climate in Algeria still faces many challenges.
Hassani told Sky News Arabia, “The television work is not easy, and we have tried to present a different work in a modern spirit that befits the Algerian viewer and respects the Algerian family. We also watch this work with our families at home.”
Strong competitor from Tunisia
This Algerian series comes at a time when one of the Tunisian TV channels is showing a similar work in its second part entitled “Harga… The Other Bank” by director Lasaad Oueslati, which deals with the stories of Tunisian youth with illegal immigration.
The Algerian critic, Jamal Mohammadi, believes that the phenomenon of clandestine immigration imposed itself on the Algerian drama, given its political, economic and social repercussions.
Tunisian official figures indicate that the phenomenon of clandestine immigration has become fatal to Tunisian youth and attracts children and women to it annually, as more than 5,000 Tunisian minors have arrived through death boats to the Italian coasts, during the past five years.
The artistic critic of “Sky News Arabia” said, “It is very important that Arab drama addresses current issues and raises issues that affect the largest segment of society, because they are topics that carry artistic and human dimensions and strong feelings, and this is what is invaded by any dramatic work to succeed.”
