His special envoy for the Sahara and the Maghreb accuses the Moroccan forces of “extreme brutality” and even speaks of “carnage” according to the images shown
The Algerian government denounced this Sunday what it described as “authentic summary executions” that it attributes to the Moroccan security forces that repelled the assault on the Melilla fence last Friday and that according to the official balance has resulted in 23 sub-Saharan immigrants dead. “The images of this carnage are extremely shocking,” said the Algerian government’s special envoy for Western Sahara and the Maghreb countries, Amar Belani, in statements to the Algerian news portal TSA.
“They are a sample of the extreme brutality and disproportionate use of force that resemble authentic summary executions in these circumstances,” said this leader of the Algerian government.
Belani held Morocco directly responsible for what happened, calling for an independent investigation. “These tragic events highlight the systematic violation of human rights by a State that has chosen, on the one hand, to exploit the ghost of immigration for the purpose of political blackmail and, on the other, to play the role of police – in exchange for cash – in the outsourcing of the management of the external borders of the European Union”, he argued.
The images of the dead immigrants in Melilla sink, according to Belani, Morocco’s attempts to rebuild its image. “We are very far from the supposed exemplary role dramatized during the celebration of the summit in Marrakech of the Global Compact for safe, orderly and regular migration,” she criticized.
UN intervention
In this context, Belani summoned international organizations and specifically the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to open an “independent and transparent” investigation to “purify responsibilities.” In his opinion, “these tragic events that have cracked the veneer of the supposed humanitarian approach in the management of migration issues must be clarified.”
For this head of the Algerian Executive, highly critical of Rabat’s actions, what happened on the border has revealed the “true face” of Morocco, “alleged ‘champion’ of migrations within the African Union and headquarters of the African Observatory of Migrations”.
