The new Alfa Romeo Giulia SWB Zagato is a one-off whose name contains the reason why it was designed: to celebrate the collaboration that has existed for over one hundred years between the Alfa Romeo brand and the Milanese atelier. Looking at the car closely, one could say that the experiment was more than successful: the final result is an extremely exclusive car built on the basis of the Giulia Quadrifoglio, which means that under the bonnet it hides the 2.9 engine V6 biturbo that delivers 540 HP. However, the main focus is clearly aimed at design, and who better than Alejandro Mesonero could tell it?
The design process of this incredible one-off was carried out by Zagato, asking for the support of the Alfa Romeo design chief and his team right from the start. And the final product, says Mesonero himself, is “a car that fits perfectly in the historical path of the two brands where the first objective was and is to combine beauty with performance“. An almost always winning mix in the history of automobiles. And speaking of history, for the occasion Zagato wanted to draw inspiration from the iconic SZ: an acronym that in Mesonero “evokes emotionsroots its origins in the profound history of coachbuilders, that of cars made with the sartorial care of those who dress a mechanic in a special way according to the thought, the culture of those ateliers which, like Zagato, in this case, have interpreted the brand of the Biscione ”.
As for the style of this new Giulia SWB Zagato, the number one in Alfa Romeo design wanted to concentrate on his “dynamic, simple body, where long lines run from the front to the rear where they give life to a strong but unobtrusive muscularity at the same time”. And if the front is characterized by the 3+3 concept of the headlamps as amply described on the new Alfa Romeos as on the SZ of the 90s, “At the rear, the ‘truncated tail’ stands out, a typical style solution of the Zagato bodywork, aerodynamic and visually very powerful“. Mesonero wanted to say important words also for the cabin, completely in carbon, which “reproposes another characteristic element of the brand with the two humps on the roof in search of height reduction, improving aerodynamics without affecting internal ergonomics”.
In short, a work carried out with great and very great attention care for details which made one of the greatest design connoisseurs in the world extremely proud and who today leads the design activity of Alfa Romeo models. “The philosophy of this new 2023 SZ is that of 1960, made up of a bodywork guided by simplicity, aerodynamics, physical lightening – concluded Mesonero – As Centro Stile we are happy to have supported Zagato by contributing to the design of this car, which with this ‘one off’ has chosen to celebrate the historic link with Alfa Romeo“.
