Miller safe, Alex Marquez not
The Japanese Grand Prix of the MotoGP class recorded the dangerous contact between Alex Marquez and Joan Mir. The Honda rider took advantage of an error in Turn-12 by the Gresini rider. The latter, in an attempt to counterattack, hit his rival’s bike with the #73 Ducati GP23 which remained dangerously attached to the #36 RC213V. Mir went into the escape route and managed to avoid an impact that could have been decidedly disastrous.
“It hit me like a missile without thinking, it’s a miracle nothing happened,” the post-race outburst of the 2020 champion who finally saw the possibility of playing a dignified race. The Commissioners decided to sanction the episode with a long lap penalty that Alex Marquez will have to pay in the Australian GP.
The youngest of the Marquez brothers does not understand why there was once again a difference in judgment between two similar cases just seven days apart: “I apologize to Mir for putting him out of the race – said Alex Marquez as reported by the Spanish newspaper AS – but in Indonesia I was also shot down by another pilot and in that case no action was taken. Once again the Commissioners have demonstrated that the rules are not the same for everyone“. The episode to which Alex Marquez refers is the front closure of Jack Miller in the change of direction between Turn-2 and Turn-3 on the first lap, a fall which also had the consequence of knocking down Alex Marquez, Aleix Espargarò and Luca Marini.
