Honduras.- The migratory flow during the first eight months of 2022 on the southern border of Honduras already multiplies by eight the data corresponding to the same period of 2021 and reaches unprecedented levels since 2018according to Action Against Hungerwhich has warned that the situation could worsen in the coming months.
The National Institute of Migration (INM) of Honduras has registered 84,762 illegal entries on the southern border of the country and Action Against Hunger does not rule out that this year more than half a million people try to cross the Central American country illegally.
The requirement of a visa to enter Honduras complicates regular access to the country for migrants, which leads many of them to contact ‘coyotes’ to enter through blind spots, being the steps of Danlí and Trojes –in Nicaragua– the busiest.
The emergency declaration in these areas led Action Against Hunger to initiate an emergency deployment, in which it has verified that nutritional care doubled in August and cases of nutritional risk continue to increase.
Most of those who want to enter Honduras they come from Venezuelaalthough there are also people from Cuba, Ecuador, Haiti and even from Yemen and Bangladesh.
“I thought it was going to be a normal trip, but I don’t recommend it to anyoneNeither with children nor pregnant. I have seen everything. Women thrown, raped, missing children, animals,” says the Peruvian Jairo Navarro, 22, in statements to the NGO. The trip can last for months.

One of the workers from the Action Against Hunger emergency team, Janire Zulaika, explained that migrants especially report the difficulties in what is known as the Darién Gap, a jungle area between Colombia and Panama.
“They also tell us about a need for food, drinking water, health support. Many people have accidents, there are many deaths, rapes. We are talking about terrible situations,” added Zulaika.
