The province of Malaga This Wednesday dawns with a large part of its territory on red alert due to heavy rainfall and accumulations of water from 120 liters per square meter in 12 hours.
The tragic experience of two weeks ago has led to extreme caution and prevention, and this Tuesday 3,000 people were evicted from their homes on the banks of the Guadalhorce River. The evictions have occurred mainly in Álora, Cártama, Alhaurín de la Torre and Pizarra, and in some homes in the Campanillas district of Málaga capital, which were already affected just over a week ago.
According to the Ministry for the Ecological Transition, these are some of the areas that are most at risk of suffering severe flooding in the province. The department makes available to the population a cartography of these lands, which They bring together 12.1% of citizens people from Malaga and to whom we must pay close attention in situations of meteorological instability.
The Guadalhorce river and the center of Malaga
It is where the largest flood points in the province are concentrated. From the Tajo de la Encantada reservoirpassing through all its tributaries and up to its mouth into the Mediterranean Sea, we find dozens of municipalities that may be affected. In an extraordinary situation, even part of Malaga airport could be flooded.
Among the most central areas of the capital of the province that can be flooded are those that are located near the stream of the Cañaswhich drinks from the Guadalhorce. At the other end of the city, the Toquero stream can flood streets and the Pablo Ruiz Picasso promenade.
The Fuengirola River
From the source of the Las Pasadas River, which ends up in Fuengirola, to its mouth, there are also flood zones, including the Mediterranean highway as it passes through the town of Malaga.
The Andalusia Avenue of the municipality, as well as places such as the Lagunas park or the Rey de España promenade, present risks of being completely flooded in a scenario of uncontrolled rainfall. In the same way, places near the river bank of Ojén (west), where golf courses are located, could also be affected.
La Axarquía and Vélez-Málaga
Another point to pay attention to is the banks of the Benamargosa riverspecifically to the town of the same name. An overflow could reach practically the center of town.
Likewise, another of the critical points is in Triana and, even more so, in the airport of The Axarquiawhere the Benamargosa and Guaro rivers converge. It is here where the Vélez River is born, which could flood the Casabermeja road and the town’s districts. In the region, in fact, Major floods are already being recorded this Wednesday.
The most flood-prone areas at the mouth of the Vélez River are located around the town of Almayate. Also in Torre del Mar, an overflow of the Seco River would flood part of the municipality.
