Midfielder Aleix García has officially become a new player for Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen, the current champion of the Bundesliga and the German Cup, and the first casualty of Míchel Sánchez’s Girona for next season , according to the Catalan club. Aleix, 26, has committed to the German club until June 30, 2029 after days of rumors and for a figure close to 20 million euros.
The midfielder ends five seasons as a Girona player divided into two stages, from 2017 to 2019 on loan from Manchester City and from 2021 to the present as a footballer owned and under the tutelage of Míchel Sánchez. With the Madrid coach he has grown until he became international: he entered Luis de la Fuente’s pre-list for the Euro Cup, although he was finally one of those discarded. Aleix has been one of the great architects and protagonists of the Montilivi club’s best season, which finished LaLiga in a historic third position and which in just its fourth year in First Division celebrated qualification for the Champions League.
The player from Tarragona will play in the top continental competition, but with the Bayer Leverkusen shirt. He closes his time at Girona with 172 games and a balance of eight goals and 21 assists and with the club’s gratitude for his “commitment, effort, dedication and professionalism,” according to the Catalan entity’s statement. According to some sources, Girona will receive 20 million euros for the footballer. The Catalan team loses one of its best players, he will have to work now to alleviate this important absence.
“I admired Leverkusen, like all football fans across Europe, for their extraordinary performances last season. I was excited that a club like this made so much effort to hire me,” Aleix García himself stated to the official media of the German club.
